A handful of agencies and their sub-offices have announced formally that they will be increasing in-person work as early as this month. For fully remote workers who do not report to an office with any regularity, the rules differ slightly. The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency and Immigration & Customs Enforcement will be relocating to DHS’ St. Elizabeths campus in D.C. All employees must depart no later than 3:00 p.m. EST, OPM said in the announcement on Aug. 7. Last month, the agency set a new requirement for teleworkers and remote workers that would mandate an in-office presence. Opponents to telework have claimed public service has ultimately suffered as a result of widespread remote work. If the Department of Justice rolls back telework, it will join several other federal agencies that so far have called employees back to offices. The Transportation Department joins a growing number of federal agencies that are seeking to increase in-person work. It’s a small sign of certainty at Social Security Administration while other agencies are doing an about-face on working from home. More than half of GSA leases are expiring within five years.
