The Office of Personnel Management announced on Jan. 22 that federal agencies would remain open until noon, but employees have the option for unscheduled telework ahead of a massive blizzard headed for Washington, D.C.
The storm, which is slated to hit the afternoon of Jan. 22, is projected to dump as much as two feet of snow in the D.C. region, lasting through the weekend.
OPM said all federal agencies would close their offices at 12 p.m.
Officials said that emergency employees would report to work as usual unless otherwise notified by their agency, but others were eligible for unscheduled leave or telework or excused absence. Unscheduled leave and early departures would not be counted as an excused absence.
The Washington Metro Area Transit Authority announced on Jan. 21 that it would shut down service to both buses and trains through the weekend. Metro trains will run until 11 p.m., but bus service closes at 5 p.m. The Metro system will reopen Monday.
